Mongolia Multimedia Slide Show

Tuvans playing archery in Bayan Olgii, Mongolia

Seemingly coming out of nowhere, seven hundred years ago the Mongols swept through much of Asia and parts of Europe under the brutal, but brilliant leadership of Genghis Khan. Only a couple of hundred years later, they retreated back into the Steppes to be virtually forgotten for the next five hundred years.

After 300 years of Manchurian rule, followed by 75 years of Communism, Mongolia is finally coming out of its isolation, revealing a beautiful and surprisingly diverse country.

Rogier Gruys lived in Mongolia for three years, traveling 12,000 km to all corners of the country. In this digital multimedia slideshow and photo exposition he takes you to places where very few tourists have ever been, from the vast Eastern Steppes to the harsh Gobi desert of the south, the pristine forests and lakes of the north, and the remote glacier-covered mountains of the far west. Along the way you'll meet the herders, child jockeys, traders, Kazakh eagle hunters and other fascinating people who make this unspoilt land their home.
